Migration from Massachusetts to New Hampshire Slowed in 2023

New Hampshire has relied on both domestic and international migration to grow its population, as the number of deaths has outpaced the number of births in the state since 2017. In-migration from nearby states has been the largest driver of migration into the Granite State, with a net increase of around 548 people moving into New Hampshire from other New England states in 2023. Although the state saw an influx of people migrating from Massachusetts during the COVID-19 pandemic, net migration from this neighboring state slowed from 2022 to 2023. While migration from Massachusetts has decreased, there was a net increase of Granite Staters migrating to neighboring Maine during the 2021-2023 period compared to the two years prior to the pandemic.
