About One in Six Granite Staters Relied Solely on Public Health Coverage in 2023

In 2023, about 60.2 percent of Granite Staters were covered by private insurance only, including those who received coverage through their employer, purchased their insurance directly, or were beneficiaries of Tricare or another type of military coverage. Approximately 52.8 percent of all Granite Staters relied only on employer-based coverage to access health care. Approximately 17.4 percent of the state’s residents received coverage only through public insurance, including Medicaid, Medicare, or coverage under the Veterans’ Administration. About 15.9 percent of the state was covered through a combination of both private and public insurance in 2023, which includes about 13.8 percent of residents who were enrolled in both Medicare and some other form of coverage, such as purchasing private supplementary plans. Despite increased enrollment in Medicaid over the prior decade, about 4.7 percent of the state’s population remained uninsured in 2023.
