More Than One Third of the State’s Population Was Over the Age of 55 in 2023

More New Hampshire residents are reaching traditional retirement age each year relative to previous years. As of July 2023, the median age in New Hampshire was 43.4 years old, making the state tied with Vermont as the second oldest state in the United States by median age, and behind only Maine’s median age of 44.8 years. Approximately 20.8 percent of the state’s population was over the age of 65, and about 15.3 percent fell between the ages of 55 to 64. In contrast, those under the age of 18 made up about 18.0 percent of the population in 2023. New Hampshire experienced the largest percentage reduction in the number of children, about 10.5 percent, of any state from 2010 to 2020.
