In-Migration Has Driven Population Growth in New Hampshire, With Most Migrating from Other New England States

In-migration from other New England states has largely driven domestic migration into New Hampshire, with a net of about 25,468 people migrating into the state from Massachusetts in 2021 and 2022 combined. The largest in-migration growth from non-New England states during this time was from California, the most populous state in the country. While migration has driven population growth in New Hampshire, the state experienced it’s largest net loss of about 6,488 people to Maine in 2021 and 2022 combined. The state also lost people to the South Atlantic region of the United States, including its net loss of about 4,384 people to Florida.
