New Hampshire Spends the Majority of Available Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Funds on Cash Assistance

States are given the flexibility to spend Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) dollars in a variety of ways, as long as the uses align with the federal program’s purposes. Similarly to national trends, the majority of TANF funds in New Hampshire are spent on basic cash assistance, which accounted for about 43 percent of spent TANF dollars during Federal Fiscal Year 2022. New Hampshire also spent a large percentage of TANF dollars on other services (15 percent), which likely includes transfers to the Social Services Block Grant. All spent TANF dollars include both funds from the federal TANF block grant, equating to approximately $38.3 million per year, as well as additional required state contributions.
