Enrollment in the State’s Cash Assistance Program Has Declined by 34 Percent Since April 2020

The state’s Financial Assistance for Needy Families (FANF) program provides cash assistance for Granite State families with low incomes who earn up to 60 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, or $1,291 per month for a family of three. Enrollment in the program increased following adjustments to the income eligibility threshold outlined in the State Fiscal Years 2018-2019 State Budget, with enrollment increasing by about 49 percent between July 2017 and July 2018. Since reaching its most recent peak in April 2020 at 8,107 enrollees, enrollment in the FANF program has declined by about 34 percent, with 5,321 total enrollees as of June 2024. Other assistance programs temporarily expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic may have contributed to the decline in enrollment, which has stabilized since those temporary expansions have ended.
