Being a mother, especially to multiple children, is a key contributing factor to lower labor force participation rates among Granite State women. From 2012 to 2022, women with at least one child under six years old and at least one other child between the ages of six and 17 consistently had the lowest labor force participation rate among women ages 20 to 64, with three-year rolling average rates ranging between 64 and 72 percent. For contrast, mothers with a child or children older than six consistently had the highest labor force participation rate, with three-year rolling average rates ranging between 80 and 83 percent participation during the same period.
